I have been dealing with written play as a piece of text, but my collaborator prefers to see it as performance. Do these two have different way they can be approached linguistically?
A text and a performance are two very different things. We can textualise a particular performance and we can perform a text. Both can be approached differently but to stretch that may give the impression that there is no link between them, that would be false. The text of Wole Soyinka's Kongi's Harvest is fixed but every particular performance of the text can be textualised.
