Macrophyte detritus can find its way, in globally significant quantities, to the bottom of submarine canyons. However, this is only a sequestration service if (1) detritivores fail to significantly consume the material or (2) if the carbon dioxide released from decomposition and the benthic detritivores is not returned to surface waters over scales less than climatic variability (e.g. the Pacific decadal Oscillation 25 to 55 years). So can anyone give me a value for the residence time or ventilation rates for these bottom waters please?
