Please see the attached review published in Advances in Agronomy. Although it describes nutrient management in wheat in South Asia, the time of application of fertilizer nitrogen in wheat should coincide with planting, crown root initiation and maximum tillering stages. Important question remains how much fertilizer need to be applied at these stages. My experience with fertilizer N management in wheat is that we need to ensure that enough nitrogen remains available to plants at the critical growth stages but also make sure that a big portion of the fertilizer is not lost via ammonia volatilization, nitrate leaching or denitrification. Since your soils are calcareous, you need to worry more about ammonia volatilization. The best way to reduce ammonia volatilization losses is that nitrogen fertilizers, particularly urea and ammonium ones, should never remain on soil surface. These can be either drilled at the time of sowing or when applied mid-season, fertilizer should be applied immediately before irrigation. The water flux will take soluble N to a depth. Even if it goes to 3 to 5 cm, it is saved from ammonia volatilization losses. So keeping this in mind, the best way to manage fertilizer N should be: apply low to moderate amounts at planting and remaining N in equal splits at crown root initiation and maximum tillering stages. Site-specific N management as described in the attached review should be used to find how much and when to apply fertilizer N to wheat.

The relative efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers as affected by time of application varies greatly from year to year due to environmental conditions. Generally, nitrogen applied in the spring at seeding is usually more effective for increasing wheat yields and/or protein content than adding nitrogen in the fall. However, there are exceptions. In dry areas, where seedbed quality and moisture conservation are a major concern, spring applications have the disadvantage of deeply working the soil and resulting in a loss of soil moisture. Alberta research has shown the dry areas, such as the brown and dark brown soil zones, there is little difference between fall and spring applications with anhydrous ammonia. Studies with ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) have shown that losses of nitrate through denitrification and immobilization in decomposing crop residues are appreciable in soils of northern Alberta. Therefore, it is recommended that the practice of fall application of ammonium nitrate should be discontinued in favour of fall applied urea or NH3 or applying N shortly before seeding in spring.
