Most of the major cities in the world are providing public transportation system for travel within the city.
What are possible application of Industrial Engineering tools and techniques for proper planning, cost effective and efficient running of public transportation systems in major cities?
As a non-engineer, it is my assumption that a good approach is to diagnoze existing transportation systems, e.g. in relation to their industrial engineering tools. However, public economics has also to be considered.
I have attached a research paper and a quantified diagram for this purpose. Concerning project management, I would apply critical path methods as transportation is a mixed 'product' of local factors, e.g. Santiago de Chile is rated generally to have the best public transportation in the Latin Americas, and Seoul seems to be well ahead of Tokyo.

Scheduling is one key area where industrial engineers can be useful in the transport sector. the use of work study would also be useful in identifying the trends and patterns of customer behavior/ movement in the bus/train stations. this is useful for effective design of the layout of the station.
I really enjoyed Stephen I. Ternyik comments. Further, in the USA the main problem deals with funing and creative financing of transportation infrastructure. One possible option is called Managed Lanes that industrial engineers can help with. Additionally, autonoumus vehicles will create a paradigm shift in transportation including, legal, economic and safety issues. For public transportation, some of the cities provide dedicated lanes for faster movement e.g. bus lane in the center of road all along.
To reduce traffic congestion and also to make it affordable, public transportation is encouraged by subsidizing cost of travel.
Depending upon the city, public transportation may have mix of buses, local trains, metro rail, taxi etc.
Industrial Engineering concepts can help in planning network of type of transportation based on movement of people for work, business, home within the city and also to and fro.

MD and WM are vital techniques in IE used to improve wide-range vehicle routing and work scheduling systems aimed at reducing cost and meeting service delivery.
