Which software is better for performing nonlinear time history analysis, SAP2000 or OPENSEES? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using SAP2000 over OPENSEES?
sap is usually suitable for trading as design and analyze and compute normal elastic or elastoplastic aituation and is defined menus and steps . but opensees is suitable for acadamic goals and usually has masssive steps much more than sap
SAP is having defined procedures based on FEM model wherein one can not make changes and have to understand limitations. OPENSEES on the the hand is opensource and under continuous development by academicians working globally. The source code is also available and one can add his own module on the basis of requirement.
It is something like comparing apples and oranges, ofcourse both are edible and eatable. Similarly, SAP 2000 and OpenSEES (OS) are two distinct softwares used for structural analysis.
1. SAP 2000 is a commercial software, whereas OS is not.
2. You cannot use your own elements and materials in SAP 2000, but in OS you can.
3. SAP 2000 can be used for structural design, it has a large database of design codes of various countries. But OS does not have any.
4. 2-3 weeks are enough for getting basic understanding and functionality of SAP 2000. You may have to spend 2-3 months, if you want to be a OS user.
5. GUI is very elegant in SAP 2000, OS Tk is still in developing stage.
6. OS offers extensive tools for nonlinear structural analysis, whereas SAP 2000 is limited.
7. Since OS is opensource, it has huge number of developers compared to SAP 2000.
