I am a Masters student in mechanical engineering. I am interested and curious about how material fails, breaks( Engineering and other materials). My master's project was 'simulating chip formation in a composite material'. What are some research areas that suits my interest, so that I can do my PhD in that?

Its nice to hear that you are interested in material failure analysis. There is broad area of research in fracture mechanics. The interdisciplinary nature of materials science gives rise to the broad scope of its activities and to its importance.
The research on materials also differs from high-energy physics and astronomy, again to use them as examples, in the scale of instrumentation required for experimental research.
Occupational safety and health is particularly interested in material failure analysis.
