I want to test whether trees that are more abundant tend to have a higher prevalence of an epiphyte (Spanish moss). However, I know that correlating proportions is sketchy (and should not be done). Can I simply rank transform (or arcsine transform) the data and then test for correlation? Or does a more appropriate method exist? I saw something on the internet that suggested using proportionality, but I can't seem to find an appropriate statistical test for proportionality.
