What I find interesting in questions like this one is that many people refer to Misconducts to Falsification, Fabrication and Plagiarism. I would argue that this may be less prominent or important as compared to holding to "flat earth belief". For example, In marine and fish locomotion the pivot points are very important. It determines the movement and direction. However, when insisting on the wrong point, without being able to explain or justify and even attempt to justify and use that other use like a herd mentality is serious academic misconduct. They treat science as a fashion show or social gathering. If you think that this single case is more common it is perceived. I can list about 5 major things in my area alone that controlled the ``flat earth people''. Yes I agree to some extent science has a social component. However, the ultimate reason for science is to make progress in our understanding. The typical belief of misconduct is more in the private arena while the second one is in the course of public.
Perhaps another statement in explanation to previous remark is Peter Hotez. He made claims that most know now that it is wrong and he is supported by the establishment.
