I work in a psychosomatic clinic and we would like to assess the more stable dimensions of our patients in a systematic manner, such as neurotizism, self-consciousness and interpersonal conflicts. can anyone suggest free-of-charge questionnaires, preferably with a german translation, that were useful in a clinical context to understand your patient better?

When I read your questions, instruments like Rotter's Locus of Control and Self-Consciousness Scale (Fenigstein, A., Scheier, M. F., & Buss, A. H. (1975). Public and private self-consciousness: Assessment and theory. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 43(4), 522-527) came to mind. I was recently in similar situation as I was looking for assessment tools for my research. I found helpful to browse through articles in my area of interest in google scholar and review instruments that were used in relevant studies.

I favor the MMPI-2/MMPI-2-RF. The construction of the PSY-5 scales correlates very well with current personality theory and the proposed, but not accepted (at the last minute) DSM 5 personality disorder definitions. The PSY-5 scales measure aggression, psychoticism, disconstraint (impulsivity), negative emotionality, and introversion/pessimism. These are stable traits, and the measures have been validated both as to construct validity and test-retest reliability. I would be happy to share a chapter (that has been peer reviewed and is in press, subject to copy editor review) in Medical Care of the Psychiatric Patient, Oxford, where I discuss these issues in detail.
If you're interested in an assessment used for the diagnosis of personality pathology, I might recommend the International Personality Disorder Examination (IPDE). (Pull, C. B., & Wittchen, H. U. (1991). CIDI, SCAN and IPDE: Structured diagnostic interviews for ICD 10 and DSM-III—R. European Psychiatry, 6(6), 277-285.) The IPDE has been translated into German, among several other languages (see link).

Peter--The DSM-5 is an excellent resource, and I was not aware of the questionnaire. The proposed DSM 5 criteria were dropped at the 12th hour, which is unfortunate. They correlate very well with personality theory, and also with the PSY-5-r profile in the MMPI-2-RF. The questionnaire to which you provide a link is very helpful, and more accessible. By the way, I use the DSM5 personality disorder definitions selectively in therapy with some patients to help them under the therapy goals.
The Personality Assessment Questionnaire is available from Rohner Research Publications. You can learn about the questionnaire by reading the online article "Introduction to Acceptance-Rejection Theory, Methods, and Empirical Evidence" at www.csiar.uconn.edu. Felix, below is a link to the APA's emerging measures, which include the PID-5 (Personality Inventory for the DSM-5). There are many other measures there aside from personality.
The IPIP is also a great resource, as many others have stated.
The PID-5 has been translated to Italian, but Im not sure if in German.
