amur carp is the cyprinide which was introduced in Himachal Pradesh from Andhra Pradesh. very poor growth rate has been observed. Is this environmental factor which is affecting the growth rate of the species or some other factor responsible for this stunting of the stock?
The problem is about reservoir catches or is it about culture pond ones is not clear.The fish being a benthic feeder,for the fish to put on some growth,it needs catfish pellets,which slowly sinks to the bottom & the fish consumes whenever needed.The light intensity & period of sunlight in a day in Himachal Pradesh is far too low as compared to Andhra Pradesh,which results in low primary productivity.This again results in very low amounts of dead plankton - which results in low benthic biomass.
Another reason could be high fluctuation of temperatures especially from October to March in Himachal Pradesh.
Its in pond culture. All the ponds are responding in the same way. But the reasons seem to be inadequate.

Well, amur carp is fond of lowlands, slowly flowing rivers and depending on the area it is located at, it's growth until first breeding can take even 10 years. So the reduced growth rate in your case may be the location itself.
Correct it is mountain area. and its growth performance is about 100gm weight gain every year in culture ponds. It is also agreed the problem of DO in the ponds could be there as there is scarcity of water supply to the farm.
DO shouldn't be a problem as the waters for the area have 10x more DO that requirements of amur. Water supplementation may be a problem, yes, and this may lead to troubles with DO, not the water quality itself.
The reason for the troubles may be simple - wrong fish in wrong area. You will see it breeding and growing there, but you have to be aware the growth will be slower than in lowland ponds. It's nature. You can't do much about it without radical steps.
What Dr. Joanna Kubizna said is right. I have experienced the same kind of problem. The amur carp was cultured at HDPE cages in Stanley reservoir, Mettur, which is located southern part of India it covered by hills. The HDPE cages were installed nearby outlet of the dam. However, a very poor growth and uneven size recorded, ranged from 10 to 70g during 9 months. we concluded that amur carp is not the suitable candidate species for cage culture. The floating supplementary feed was given; due to its nature of bottom-feeding habit, the poor growth rate was obtained. Meanwhile, Pangasius showed a good absolute growth rate in the same location. Temperature fluctuation & depth of the pond could be possible factors for slow performance of growth in this species. I have tried this species in sirmour district specially in the nahan & paonta sahib blocks where most of the months temperature remains uniform and rate of temperature fluctuation is low comparatively in mandi district where actually this species was introduced initially. rate of recovery of the fish is much better ( 48-52%) as compared to mandi district where 15-18% was noticed. and rate of fluctuation is quite high.
Dear Dr. Ashok Kumar Verma, if temperature and DO are not the causative agents for lower growth, because, in Stanley reservoir, the rate of temperature ranged from 27.8-degree celsius (January 2015) to 34-degree celsius (November 2014). it had sufficient water depth minimum of 34 ft. The DO also measured ranged from 4.53 to 12.97mg/l. There might be some other reasons. There is need of more scientific information for commercial cultural practices.
Furthermore, your document of the growth performance of amur carp showed that amur carp had higher growth performance as compared to common carp (Scale carp). Despite, a large variation observed between culture system. I saw one more paper too, Basavaraju and Reddy (2013) evaluated the growth performance of amur carp between monoculture and polyculture in different water bodies. He showed the maximum absolute growth was observed 557g in the polyculture and 258g in the monoculture in 7-month duration.
so far I experienced that, by offering floating feed not obtained the optimum growth in Stanley. Hence, large variation in size was observed 10 to 90 g in 9 months. Actually, amur carp mouth is downward, so maybe semi-floating feed is appropriate.
I have a question, what is the optimum stocking size of amur carp culture ? pls give the information specifically like the tank,/pond/cage/others.
