As it is mentioned earlier in this chapter, having a child with CL/P may be an immense emotional strain on the mothers. One important factor that increases this emotional strain tends to be the facial appearance of the child . Mothers of these children may experience lowered in self-esteem and emotional distress for the loss of an ideal child . In the first months following the birth, the mother may have difficulties adjusting to her child’s facial appearance, so the mother may be less involved in facial interaction.
