Additive manufacturing generally means that a product is being made by adding sliced layers on top of each other and joining these layers by any method like gluing, melting etc. First thing to note is that, all items cannot be made with such technique. For some overhanging parts, we may need to manufacture it in reverse order like building the part up side down. In many cases, we may have to redesign some parts to make them additive friendly by either dividing the part or putting additional separable support part. It also depends on method of gluing and the time required for joining the layers and size or thickness of each layer. In my opinion, all this is part of design for manufacturing which is nothing but redesign of the parts to make it compatible with existing machines and processes ( Additive 3D printer in this case) while ensuring economy without compromising quality.
