I am curious what could be hot research/study topics in the fields related to CMOS integrated circuits (both analog and digital).
My specific questions should be:
1. At device level:
- What are new potential devices? Are there some new sub-micron devices, I mean nano-scale CMOS devices?
2. At circuit/system levels:
- What are challenges? Are there any new circuits needed to be designed and invented?
- What are the hot trends, for example in the past few years: (a) Ultra-low power with sub-threshold circuits for energy harvesting applications, for portable/wearable applications; (b) Circuits for Intelligent Artificial (AI) applications, (c) Circuit for biomedical applications, (d) Circuits for neuromorphic applications and so on.
3. At application levels:
- What are the hot trends of applications that force CMOS integrated designers/researchers to think about?
Some publications and/or information will be highly appreciated.
May be one of the most important topics is sensor development with interfaces to embedded micro controller or microprocessors.
I n addition to development of internet of things IoT devices and nodes for IoT networks.
The other major application is the development of chips for the 5G mobile communication systems especially in mm waves.
Design in mm waves is very demanding.
In addition the control of power flow in the smart grids combining fuel power stations with renewable energy generators.
Fully automation of the electric vehicles to drive themselves.
Advancing the biomedical electronics for diagnosis and therapy and realize the telemedicine.
As you see the coming period is characterized by wealth of applications that can benefit from the advanced fabrication technology.
On the level of the devices there is still silicon transistor scaling and miniaturization as a subject of research.
As for the integration, 3D integration will be further developed to increases the wafer stack.
In the circuit level may be the data converters A/D and D/A of utmost interest, they are very important building blocks.

we are all integrating the 3d ics through for increase in band width.
Currently many research groups are exploring the potential aspects of memristor both at device and circuit level. Many research works are going in the field of neuromorphic networks. Artificial neural networks with memristors had been started after a nanoscale solid state device is developed in HP Laboratory in 2008. CMOS implementation of memristor emulator and its applications in chaotic, random access memory, neural network and linear/nonlinear cellular circuits have been reported in literature. Mimicking the behavior of memristor at circuit level is also a challenging problem. Further memristor application in RF area can also be explored.
