Process mining is an analytical discipline for discovering, monitoring and improving real processes by eliminating all non-value adding activities.

One should select a proven method to find hidden inefficiencies and remove them for faster, more efficient operations.

I suggest one good research topic in manufacturing process mining using the method, "VALUE STREAM MAPPING. Refer Rother, M. and Shook, J (1999). Also refer Singh, A N.(2010), Lean Manufacturing Principles to Practices.

Process mining is a novel scientific discipline on the interface between process models and event data. Process mining techniques are used to discover, analyze and improve real processes by extracting knowledge from event logs.

I think dealing with challenges in applicability and characteristics of process mining techniques, such as conformance checking techniques, applicable to large and complex datasets can be some interesting issues.
