Very recently researchers have developed a new class of high efficiency membranes for CO2 capture. These membranes are based on a single layer of graphene. CO2-selective polymer chains anchored to graphene efficiently capture CO2 from a mixture of flue gases. Scientists have combined graphene's optimized porosity, pore size and functional groups (the chemical groups that react with CO2) to create nano-thick, CO2-selective membranes. The two-dimensional nature of this membrane makes it even more interesting for CO2 gas capture. The concept is very generic and paves the way for a series of high-efficiency gas separations. This research opens the way to others, for the selective capture of other types of gas.
