I am looking for information/ numbers of wettability (and contact angles) of different liquids (water as well as other organic solvents) on graphite, graphene and carbon black surfaces. I am preferably looking for something that will wet these materials.
Can someone suggest some good references/ experimental information on the same.
Good wetting will probably be achieved with aromatic liquids because the structure of these carbons is largely condensed benzene rings. On carbon black the edges of the sheets may be oxidized and then an aromatic component with basic (alkaline) polar side groups will probably work best (next to van der Waals and pi electron interaction also (strong) polar interaction. Graphene is probably the most difficult surface to wet because the sheets are thin and thus the van der Waals interaction is low, it decays not with a third power of distance but with something between 3 and 6. NB. Carbon black surfaces are in general strongly polluted with poly aromatic hydrocarbons. Such particles can be cleaned with extraction in dichloromethane. Dichloromethane might thus also be a good liquid for wetting.
