Gypsophila paniculata (baby`s breath) is the most important summer flower produced in Ecuador. Recently we have started assays to produce it without pesticides that damage biocontrols or if possible organically. So far only Thrips have been really difficult. We made a border with plants that attract beneficial insects (borage, fennel, basil). Orius and other biocontrols are in the area, however they have not been enough effective. Also we applied Beauveria bassiana. Yet it did not work. Thrips populations kept increasing. This did not work even with spinosad, neem and a garlic-pepper mixture. We are thinking abour improvementes with other plant in borders. Perhaps you can suggest additional ideas? Thanks in advance.

Try to identify a potential native predator as well as pathogens which will be helpful in controlling them. You can also try Yellow Sticky Traps which ll minimize the population to certain extent.

I wonder if we should wait longer time to have an increase of Orius population or maybe start raising it and/or other insects. Google translator was great with you message Jinan. In the Netherlands the biological product Flipper can be used against thrips. Flipper contains carboxylic acids with hydrocarbon chains of 14 - 20 carbons. It is safe on biological beneficials and pollinators used in NL. We advice Flipper e.g. for control of thrips tabaci in onions (outdoor), and in glasshouse-crops. To be used in 2 % solution. Contact activity, so use a high sprayvolume of water, in glasshouses up to 1000 l/ha. Water quality is important. Don't use "hard" water with to much Ca+ or Mg+, so not more than 16,8 dH and pH 7 min. Thrips are hidden in sunlight, so spray with clouded weather or in the evening. Don't use additives. Interval 7 days, max 3x in a row. Of course, only use Flipper when it is registered in Ecuador.
Try to plant Marigold as deterrent plant in border or anywhere possible around your flower.

Thanks Xuan Trinh Thi . We are doing some assays with Beauveria bassiana without good results so far. Probably we should start doing this in the evening as Harm Groeneweg suggested for other product. Also next week we will use Beauveria bassiana mixed with a coadyuvant called Porter (from Stoller). It is an extract from soybean that supossedly helps Beauveria to survive. If it does not work perhaps we will do assays with a mixture with horticultural oil and Beauveria. I will follow your advise and try Verticillium lecanii. Last week we applied diatomaceous earth with garlic and hot pepper. Damage seems to have reduced as well as presence of inmature Thrips. Yet adult population still is present. We are also preparing a fermented solution of garlic and pepper (a purin).
If you use beauveria, you need to care about temperature and humidity because beauveria suitable with low temp. and high humidity. i also used and bring good results and Verticillium or Metarhizium also same. in my country I suggust for farmer apply together with Neem oil on Rose flower plant
Thanks Xuan Trinh Thi . I tried Neem mixed with Beauveria but it did not work. I think the main problem is time of spraying. I will do assays in the evening.
Neem oil is a biological active agent that having bioactivity as insecticide, bactericide and fungicide. I suppose a neem oil product caused adverse effect on Beauveria containing biopesticide if both product mixed.
Thanks Susrama i Gede Ketut I was checking some articles about the use of neem oil and Beauveria mixed. Apparently it works. However it might be a good idea to try using them appart. We are discussing here (at the farm) about the potential of using Beauveria on the lower parte of the plant and soil and Neem on the upper part of the foliage. Maybe by doing that we will place Beauveria in a space with high humidity, thus with great potential for infecting Thrips in inmature stages?
Agree, in my experiments, I spray neem oil before 16 to 24 hours after that i apply continue beveria or Verticillium. It have good results.
Would you mix Beauveria and Verticillium to apply them at the same time?
I think that it is better to do compatibility efficacy before applying both products as a mixture.

Do you have the species ID? The control effectiveness also depends on understanding the thrips biology and life cycle. For example, some species pupate on soil and some predatory mites can be useful to kill immature stages.
Thanks Adriano. The species is Frankliniella occidentalis. We followed some of the recommendations above. Applying about half hour before sunset (17:30 hs) was very effective for increasing spinosad effect. Probably a mixture of garlic with hot pepper also worked better with this schedule.

This thrips species is highly polyphagous and has the ability to hide in tight spaces in flower buds and terminal foliage, making the contact with the product more difficult.
