Hello,
How can we determine the vertical temperature profile of the atmosphere using satellite imagery? Which satellite data and which band to be used? Is the data freely available or paid? Also comment on how accurate is this vertical (atmospheric) temperature estimation process.
Note that I am NOT interested in UHI effect or in estimating the land surface temperature. I want the atmospheric temperature at various altitudes. Thanks.
Maybe you can determine cloud temperature using Landsat-8, the heights of the clouds using cloud shadows and sun elevation, different cloud heights to approximate the profile and some more elevated approaches like here: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20120001992.pdf

Please see https://doi.org/10.5067/MODIS/MOD07_L2.061. This provides vertical profiles of temperature and water vapor. The data are available at no charge. Documentation including the algorithm theoretical basis document are available as well. According to the introductory material on the website " The MODIS temperature and moisture profiles are produced at 20 vertical levels. The MODIS atmospheric water-vapor product is an estimate of the total tropospheric column water vapor made from integrated MODIS infrared retrievals of atmospheric moisture profiles in clear scenes. The vertical profile of the atmosphere is divided into four layers: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere. The tops of these layers are known as the tropopause, stratopause, mesopause and thermopause, respectively. The vertical profile of the atmosphere can be obtained by taking measurements of the intensity of electromagnetic wave emitted by the atmosphere at multiple frequencies, as different frequencies can indicate the condition of the atmosphere at different heights. As well as the surface record, satellites circle the Earth over the poles looking at part of the atmosphere up to 10km above our heads known as the troposphere. They carry microwave instruments that measure how much heat is given off by oxygen molecules, from which work out the air temperature. Radiosondes measure the vertical profiles of air temperature, relative humidity, and pressure between the ground and about 30 km (19 miles or 4 mb).
