Hello researchers, I have a question mainly on Finnish colleagues. In my PhD thesis I want to analyze teaching situations in mathematical education. As part of this analysis, I want to conduct research in my country as well as in Finland. I would like to use video as a research method, but the question is: what about the protection of pupils' personal data? I already have some experience with my diploma's research in Finland - it was difficult to submit just anonymous questionnaires. So will anyone advise me how is it with the new GDPR in Finland, and can I even think about my research plan? Thank you!
You must seek personal written consent from each student. It must be clear for each person exactly what you want to do and how you will use the data including images. Probably, you will need to submit an application for ethical clearance from the Finnish Academic Ethics Committee (find out the proper name for this committee in Finland). You must discuss this with your supervisor who will assist you in writing the application and guiding you through the process.
Linda Lane: Clearly, I assumed a similar procedure. It seems that, according to this necessity, qualitative research instead of quantitative is a more appropriate option, right? For example, focus on one class or even selected pupils because of the necessary consents. Anyway, thank you for your reply and wish you a nice day.
There is no reason to be afraid of getting consent. Most students nowadays are social media literate and would happily participate if you make clear what is to be done, i.e. the scope of your project - and provide an exist option in case they change their mind at a later date.
