This is a slightly controversial question, however I can't seem to find much on the issue. I am currently conducting a study which aims to look at the differences between males and females. However, I have had a couple of transgender people take part in the study. The study involves peer ratings of these participants in video clips. Ethically and morally I would like to group these individuals into the gender categories they define themselves as, i.e. if they define as male then they are male. However, could this bias my results at all when I'm specifically examining males and females as the IV? Is there any way around this? Has anyone else had a similar issue? Are there any papers that discuss this? I don't want to exclude anyone from the study as this is not representative.
