This is a great question and I haven't seen it asked. It's a real question, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You may have to drill down to what you want in terms of your analysis, meaning what does male/female mean: are you getting at, e.g, being socialized as girls, say (regardless of how someone felt psychically)? People who inhabited a gender x amount of time, regardless of changes to identity? Is there a biological component, and if so, is it chromosomal or hormonal? You'll need to decide whether you mean sex or gender, and operationalize what you are getting at about gender. There are still reasons to investigate people based on assigned sex, chromosomal sex, and early life gender (meaning public/social), not only self-declared but you 'll have to articulate them.

i think it is important to collect data about all genders. Including Others as a category apart from Male and Female will be helpful for further studies as new insights will provide valuable inputs for future. The categorical classification is useful for analysis and new idea development.
