Has anyone tried the following:
Why not use RG "questions" as a collaborative platform for writing articles? Rules could be simple, one is the organizer (first author) and makes the question. Everyone who contribute their knowledge and views about the subject in the message list, gets their names on the list of authors. At the end of the discussion, organizers make synthesis of the discussion in an article form and publish it on the list. The other "authors" can reject the use of their names, if they wish, but cannot forbid submitting article forward. After all comments, organizers send the article to journal and normal process continues.
I think that the number of authors can be quite large, but also papers can be quite interesting and widely collected understanding can be something not part of the usual average articles today. And this can be one way to make real science with an unknown group of people. Only thing that means is your contribution. Also interesting questions presented here can be found by bigger audiences.
Comments or experimental results are welcome. I would like to know, does this really works
I agree think that is a very interesting idea! very democratic very "open innovation" oriented and yes as stated before probably it will need a very good reviewing job after but probably the results would potentially be very "diverse" and original stepping somehow out the classical way !!... I like it ! ....
Journals take care of that. Regular procedure, although if there some need for revision, it should be discussed using the list. Writing a paper with totally strange researchers is somehow unusual and not highly used concept (at least not yet). :) However, I think that it can be exciting experience.
Interesting idea. However, an outcome of such collaborative effort seems more plausible if the research study is not empirical or experimental. Otherwise, how to collect and analyse the data in a project that involves diverse researchers (who just contribute their opinions), even if everyone focuses on the same issue? Unless, the discussion itself becomes the data. This is happening already. Since many of such discussions are easily available, researchers use them as a source of data (e.g., for linguistic and, more recently, behavioural research).

Idea is looking good. but how to assure which author's contribution is significant and meaningful to be the 2nd or third author.
How do we rely on virtual author too.
