I was wondering if there is any manner by which minute ventilation may be derived from a typical spirometry test like measurement of forced vital capacity.
Is there a correlation between FVC, FEV1, or PEF with minute ventilation?
Also, could one use the maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV) test to estimate minute ventilation while asking participants to breathe normally and not put in any extra effort/breath faster?
Minute ventilation relates to long term tidal breathing. It can vary with exercise, and other stimuli. By definition it can not be estinmated from by one breath forced manouvers.
if you had a recording bell type spirometic instrument and the subject breathed normally on it you could measure ventilation by multiplying tidal volume by frequency.

Prof. James Leigh, thank you for bringing up the issue of activity levels. If you do not mind, may I query a little more on this? In this specific study, participants will be comfortably seated during and prior to the measurement. Since the maximum voluntary ventilation test does report a minute ventilation (but with maximum effort from participant), I wondered if participants breathing normally during the same test could be used as an indication of minute volume.
