I am doing doctoral study in above topic. Please suggest or recommend me research methodologies with related to above topic. I will check expansion of urban fringe in the Karachi, will construct variables pinpointing infrastructure deficiencies due to sprawl and at the last will check relation of these both variables with respect to economic inequalities.
Dear Sayed, I have to admit that I am not a specialist in Karachi problems, but have some ideas about urban patterns and inequality. I would start from stylized facts. Next I would go to the map of Karachi. It is good if you will find some data about city's income distribution and regional comparison (income disparity across districts of Karachi). This should probably be in local statistics; you can have better access to it. Then I would look at those patterns, dynamics and formulate some hypothesis about the link between urban sprawl and disparity. It is not possible to formulate the whole plan before you find some initial structure behind the facts. Then you can use both econometrics and some urban models, like CBD theory. Spatial pattern of housing prices (per 1 sq.m) would be also informative. Good luck!
I would advise mixed methods. In addition to using quantitative methods as suggested by the person who answered before me, I would add a number of in-depth semi-structured/open interviews with people/households of different social classes living in the areas of your focus, to find out what it really means to live and work there, for their livelihoods and their wellbeing. Their stories could be enlightening, and they may also help you to illustrate and interpret key findings from your quantitative work.

Yes, a household budget survey, linked to a housing and access to infrastructure survey would be crucial for your task. Increasingly research is also considering the economics of the underground 2.0, which refers to the uneven development between above ground infrastructures and those below ground such as sewage and storm water systems and leads.
