I have recently completed a course in conducting Qualitative research but I still have several questions regarding critical theory and grounded theory. Can anyone recommend a few texts which explain these two specific directions other than Merriam (2009) and Gall, Gall, & Borg ( 2007) texts?
For Grounded Theory, you can look at the work of Kathy Charmaz, starting with the new second edition of her book Constructing Ground Theory, which includes a discussion of using GT with a social justice orientation. She also discusses that connection in her chapter "Grounded Theory Methods in Social Justice Research" in the most recent (4th) edition of the Denzin and Lincoln Handbook of Qualitative Research.
Good advice David. Seminal texts from seminal authors!! Of course, for GT, most things related to the last few decades related to Strauss, Glaser & Corbin (and their various collaborations) would assist - but Charmaz has, indeed, put a more modern spin on things.

I know that SAGE Research Methods have several books that will be of help. They have also published several hundred case studies recently, which are helpful. I suggest you check their collection if your library has access.
You mention critial theory and grounded theory in one sentence... although they may seem to be on the same level, they are not. While as Grounded Theory is a methodology that follows a procedure set out to conduct qualitative research, critical theory is a school of thought that has certain views on the way research can be conducted... Karl Marx' ideas tend to fit within the critical theory although it is constantly evolving...
In the Merriam (2009) text all of the main directions (or schools) were virtually addressed by name in one or two sentences. We were instructed to avoid grounded theory at this time (time of the class). I was able to see some truth in studying qualitative research methodology but I am still stuck on the idea of quantitative methodology as it returns concrete summaries without a lot of interpretation of data. Either the results were there, or they were not. Quan is not up for a lot of interpretation.
