Strategic competence ‘communication strategies’ has become an important element of the communicative competence that a second or foreign language learner needs to develop in order to communicate effectively and appropriately. CSs have been viewed by many scholars as having an essential role in language learning and appealed for teaching such strategies to students and training them to use as they play a role in communication and in learning through communication as well. To what extent do you agree with this and do you think that we can teach communication strategies???
hi. explicit teaching different strategies to language learners to tackle communication problems caused by a lack of linguistic resources like paraphrasing, substitution, coining new words, switching to the first language, and asking for clarification can be vital.in order to get strategic competence, people can be educated by successful strategy users. discussing the problem in English classes allows the learners to self report their effective strategies. best
Teaching communicative competence is undoubtedly important in teaching EFL whether for beginners or advanced learners.All components of this kind of competence ( grammatical , sociolinguistic , discoursal ,and strategic) should be gradually taught and developed in the learners according to their level and their teacher's teaching skill in addition to the teaching material designed for this purpose.Not to forget that this kind of competence should be accompanied by teaching pragmatic competence which consists of the clarity principle and politeness principle.The former secures opening the channel of communication while the latter ensures keeping those channels open.Thus, the learners conversational skills are correctly established provided that activities that brainstorm their thinking should be properly designed.Hence, students knowledge of the rules of language use would be correctly enhanced.
I strongly agree that explicit CS 'training' in the classroom is beneficial to improve speaking confidence especially in lower-proficiency and/or demotivated language learners. I speak from personal experience, having dealt mostly with low-proficiency learners at non-prestigious universities in Japan who are in compulsory EFL classes.
When language learners do not know how to say a word in English, they can communicate effectively by using their hands, imitating sounds, inventing new words, or describing what they mean. These ways of communicating are communication strategies (CSs)not explicitly taught. EFL teachers are not always aware of the importance of teaching communication strategies to their students or, if they are aware, they do not explicitly train their students to use them. they do not know that explicit teaching of the strategies can help them to know which strategy and when they should use that paves the way for their engagement and communication by different means.
Everybody has sound points. Indeed, we develop our EFL/ESL students' communicative completence by explicitly and implicitly teaching them what language to use, when, where and with whom. I agree with Miss Farangis that communication strategies shld be taught explicitly because some beginners find silence the only option when they can no longer converse.
Code-switching is a language phenomenon. I believe, we cannot and should not stop our students to code-switch for them to express themselves confidently. Studies have shown, anyway, that it's not always defficiency driven. It performs pragmatic and communicative functions.
