In physics is a relation but it cannot relate, as is generally regarded, postulated effect (acceleration) with mass for 2 reasons.
1. Force is itself an effect but of a postulated cause i.e mystery of original of gravitational force as effect of this cause
2. Mass definition as that which occupies space is upmost unsatisfactory, "amount of matter" similarly not specifying any item or meaningful quantity which is a vehucle for anchoring relation
You have to make up your mind about the general dynamical structure of the universe. In ancient Greece (about 500 B.C.) there were 2 concepts. The first concept is directly related to sensorial reality, the mutual relations between the observable/detectable phenomena. That means that the origin of cause and effect is restricted to the properties of the phenomena, the "force" behind reductionism.
The second concept (Eleatic school of philosophy) describes the dynamical changes – inclusive the phenomena – as the result of an underlying reality. The underlying reality has a structure that tessellate the whole universe and the properties of the dynamical units of the structure create reality as we know it (“physical reality”).
Philosophers like Isaac Newton used the first concept (reality = phenomenological reality = relational reality). But during the last decades – under influence of the conceptual framework of quantum mechanics – the general concept has changed. Now it is supposed that the universe is tessellated with basic quantum fields (QFT) and the properties of the structure of these fields create “physical reality”. However, most physicists prefer the first concept because it is relative easy to understand and it is well suited for applied physics and “ad hoc” explanations.
The conceptual framework of modern quantum field theory (QFT) isn’t clear and the formalism is a mixture of parts of quantum mechanics, special relativity and gauge theories. That is why QFT isn’t attractive for scientists who are not involved in the research to modify QFT (like the research to develop a theory of quantum gravity).
