Looking for interest in developing a novel system to produce pure CO2 from methane. The application is for EOR projects where a source of CO2 is not readily available, but there is, or will be, associated gas with oil production. Rather then flaring this gas, it would be used to generate a pure CO2 stream for re-injection, as well as electrical power for the injection system. I'd like to discuss the thermodynamics and practicalities. System could also be used for geosequestration from a power gen system, but may only be break even...
Among efficiency criteria I would list footprint, corrosion and life-cycle beyond more obvious ones. Life-cycle because, the gas production dynamics may contradict EOR benefits - unless dealing with a repeated pattern the interest of the process might be severely curtailed by the time difference between EOR needs and gas availability. Portable is very good for patterns. Footprint because situations where gas is waste are definitely more likely to occur offshore than onshore. Corrosion because it is a general concern with CO2 but also a substantial fraction of the potential applications might be retro-fit. Overall, application range might be narrower than one might initially think but likely exist.
Thaks Adam. A simple two or three phase separator, as would normally be required, would take off the most volatile components, of which methane will be in the vast majority. The methane supply may also not be directly from the wells, but after processing which is required anyway.
