"When mice on a high-fat diet are restricted to eating for eight hours per day, they eat just as much as those who can eat around the clock, yet they are protected against obesity and other metabolic ills"
Could this in part be a result of changes to the composition of gut microbiota?
A period of fasting would not not only starve the host but also the bacteria in the G.I tract, which could potentially be more sensitive given their shorter life spans?
More continuous eating on the other hand would provide the fuel for 'unhealthy' bacteria to multiply and disrupt the balance of the microbiota. Numerous studies have linked certain strains of bacteria to metabolic disease and inflammation.
Are there any opinions on the obesity/ intestinal microbiota relationship and whether we can alter them with the timing of feeding?
