Hello everyone, I am currently in the development stages of designing a research question for my thesis. I want to explore the barriers and facilitators to a particular best practice guideline in healthcare, as it appears to be lacking in practice. I plan to use a theoretical framework, namely the COM-B model, which helps identify the factors that influence behavior. Can this be used in my study, as I am aware that some research designs aim to be as inductive as possible? What methodology could I potentially use, or should I remove the framework?
I recommend that you use a funnel-based format with either individual interviews or focus groups. This strategy divides the interview questions so that you begin with broad open-ended questions that capture participants' interests and experiences. Then you transition into questions that are more targeted to your pre-determined research interests.
This way, you can learn whether the participants' themselves discuss the topic in ways that match your preconceptions. then you can assess their reactions to your prior framework.
Miles and Huberman (1994) say both inductive and deductive reasoning are possible in qualitative research. Indeed there isn’t quite possible to go into a research with a blank mind having no preconceptions. So it’s fine if you come into your study with COM-B as a predeterminef framework. It can guide you what to look for (capacity, motivation and opportunity) when searching for enablers/barriers. But this model doesn’t help you much when it comes to explore what in opportunities. If you stay open enough, then you can let data drive you to form new categories under the opportunity layer. E.g., in our study we applied a Socio-Ecological model to extend the O layer.
