If the financial capacity is there, I agree with your idea. But, it is really very hard to do that. Leave alone changing the old system, even the old system of teaching is not properly and fully established to fulfill the needs of in my country.

Teaching based on the use of technology in class (e.g; video-projector, power-point, …) had a significant positive impact. It enhances learning by providing a better understanding of the topic as well as motivating students. I agree with you Dr Pattanayak.

Not completely. I agree with Mehdi Ali that there still needs to be some kind of “working out” and fighting though questions (at least in mathematics).

Also lets remember for the students’ sake, they should see something similar to what they will be expected to do on an exam before taking it. If everything they’ve seen is ppt, they may not be building the necessary skill of working through the problems themselves.

I agree with the opinions expressed by the RG members but still today black board with chalks play a good impact on the student learning process. Power point presentation is very effective in teaching method especially for complicated diagrams and flow charts. But student may not fully grasp the contents. While in a board method student can follow step by step. At the end of the PPT presentation student may happy and enjoy the class but how much content student can remember ? As teacher for several years, I am observing this difference in these two aspects. It is my personal opinion only.

3 month's salary of one college teacher in India.

It can easily be performed at least for science streams in Indian college and universities. This amount of money is not a problem.

Problem lies with many teachers who did not read anything except newspaper for last a few years. They will not agree to learn anything new.

I agree. Power Point Presentation can carry text, audio and visual content in combination. Even real environments can represented in the classroom through PPP.

I do agree with you. Ideally, this should be the procedure for good, effective teaching. Such a procedure, should result in saving some time for the teacher, and that time could be utilised in explanation / interaction with the students.

Your question takes me back to my university days. My writing speed is miserably slow and hence most of the time it was not possible for me to take notes of the lectures completely. I suffered a lot for this. I personally believe that in addition to Power Point Presentation during College / University lectures, a copy, hard / soft, consisting of the lecture-content should also be provided to the students.

As mentioned by many people earlier, there could be many constrains to achieve this. But I believe a beginning has to be made at some point of time. This should be achievable, if not immediately, some time in near future.

PowerPoint is a good tool for presentation of mostly-fixed concepts and arrays of facts. For those of us who teach critical skills (e.g., logical and critical reasoning, mathematical problem solving...), PP comes with huge practical limitations that chalk and chalkboards do not have. In particular, I cannot show students how a reasoning process - sound or unsound - unfolds, much lead them through various routes to a solution or routes to various solutions. Those limitations are still more significant when I ask students to participate in the analysis or solution, since the flow and content of the discussion must be determined and revised as the discussion itself unfolds. I can create slides as I teach, but it's slow and onerous for me and a distraction for the students - and thus it significantly reduces how much teaching I can accomplish, both in each class and over the course of an academic term, particularly compared to the simplicity of chalk, blackboard and eraser.

In short, removing chalkboards to make way for exclusive use of PP or its competitors would significantly restrict the range of skills that can be taught effectively. I strongly believe that reasoning skills must be taught, maintained, sharpened and extended as students mature. Such classes should start no later than middle school but elementary-school students are able to engage in age-appropriate exercises that instill critical skills, including intellectual self-evaluation and creative thought.

An entirely separate consideration: running PP also requires a stable supply of electricity to power the equipment. Not every school can count on that, and it may not be a reasonable use of the available supply.

Yes, use of PP teaching is very difficult in school level.

But it may be a very good media to teach students of the colleges and universities, particularly in subjects like medicine, agriculture, biotechnological, other biology related subjects and subjects like geology, physics, chemistry etc.

I currently teach students in MD, MPH, and PhD programs. When I began 25 years ago, I taught undergraduates at both a top-tier university and a small, local college focused on producing teachers and nurses. My students have always had varying levels of preparation - and they too need the interactive teaching and critical review and revision that chalkboads serve far better than PP.

I agree that for other kinds of teaching PP is the best tool available. I use it when I lecture on history, for example, even when the lecture is designed to be interactive. My point is simply that PP alone cannot support a full range of subjects essential to well-rounded intellectuals and fully empowered citizens.

I write on the example of my own work. I work at a technical university. I lecture for students and carry out expert opinions and research.

In my opinion, Power Point is helpful, you can better present the topic, show more and interesting than on the blackboard.

Most lectures and presentations of results I have prepared in the Power Point program. But I can not imagine the situation that there would be a lack of a classic blackboard and chalk - I often use blackboard, which complements my presentations, especially when there are questions and discussion.

Lectures are well organized with power point presentation which a better quality of text and illustrations. Teaching with PPT can be more interesting because it can incorporate animations, pictures, graphs, 3D images, sequence of images, and videos. Teaching with chalkboard engages the students/learners actively and keep them attentive to what the teacher is writing and providing knowledge on the board, thus student–teacher interaction is better. Both the teaching modes have their own advantage and limitation. I think a combination of both would be fine for effective teaching and learning.

I think that a lecture using Presentation is only good for humanitarian areas, but in any case a lecturer should explain his knowledge in writing on the blackboard, especially mathematics, chemists and physics.
