Starting a research needs a plan to be followed. For master and PhD theses, graduate students are asked to prepare and submit a research plan. How can we help them to select topic, have the appropriate title, set up a plan, manage their plan, prepare a progressive report.....etc.
Most importantly, practical relevant issues in their communities are fields of research. Indicative titles come from highlighted keywords. The plan should have an introduction about the subject, what other researchers are doing in the topic of interest, determining the upcoming study vision, methodology to fulfill the study. Finally a time-table to fulfill research plan.

I would say that one of the most important preparations is simply ensuring that they have read a lot of material in the field in question. Doing so will not only give them better insight into the research, but also into the types of titles and content. If you can find a good source for research proposals, such as grant requests, that might help too.

Planning, in general, is the eyesight for overcoming future challenges and obstacles and a strong means to correct path and review achievement.
The answer mainly depends on the purpose of study, i.e., if it is sponsored project then the the topic is already selected. Besides, if the selection of the topic is flexible, I would recommend the student to work on an promising area (hot topic). The planning stuff is a crucial part to be learned by the researcher. I would say the definition of the main aim of his research is the key point. The aim then should be broken down into objectives. The role of the supervisor is mainly to check if these objectives are deliverable! and the time scale that is specified makes sense!. Lastly, to report the progress, it is simply to show in which objective the researcher is working and which objective(s) is/are already done.
Before starting any 'specific research' plan, some questions are really need to be asked. Who can support to undertake it? then, is the research really good and doable? Is the specific research interesting to the reader and it meets the students need? Who are the stakeholders in the specific research? How will the specific research benefit the audience? Then, a list of activities for the plan need to be produced and are there any tasks depending on others? Finally, the most important thing is are there plan B for the 'specific research;?
