I work with unsaturated polymers and study the supercritical hydrogenation process of them. I performed thermal analysis (DSC) on samples with different percentages of hydrogenation (%) and obtained very similar crystallinity (Xc) results regardless of (%) saturation. Is there a direct relationship between Xc and % saturation?
Unsaturated polymers on hydrogenation gets saturated due to addition of hydrogen across the double bonds which restricts the movement of polymeric chains.and thereby bring about chains more closer and more organizational and orientational order and therefore more degree of crystallinity but up to a certain critical limit.
I agree with Dr Shrikaant Kulkarni , degree of crystallinity depends on polymer chain stiffness. More saturated polymer chain is more rigid.
Are you saturating these polymers in their solid state? Is it possible the crystalline structure already present, cannot rearrange after hydrogenation? - at least, not very quickly? If so, melting and re-crystallization might show a change.
