It is not clear to which purpose "Baghdad device" is used. Also, Galvani could not be considered as a electrochemists because he belived in "animal electrity" and "vis vitalis". Bioelectrochemistry, as well as photoelectrochemistry is only the part of general electrochemisty.

First of all thanks for the discussion.

Dear prof. Braun “Lenden jar” is a pure electrostatic device and does not have any connections with electrochemistry.

The Discovery of Luigi Galvani is only phenomenological. That something became a scientific discovery, the observed phenomena must have proper scientific explanations. That is not in the case of “animal electricity” and “vis vitalis”. The “animal electricity” is pure complex electrochemical reactions in the brain.

Therefore, some scientific discoveries must have an impact on the development of society. As you probably know, the Nobel prize is awarded, not only for the discovery but also the committee consider the influence of those discoveries on society.

One example is obvious. Claudius Ptolemy (~100-170 a.d.), observe that obviously Sun, Moon, planets, stars orbiting around Earth. Therefore, he establishes a geocentric system. It passed almost 1400 years that the Ptolemy system is replaced by the Copernican heliocentric system (1543) (it should be mentioned that such a system is also proposed by Aristarchus of Samos c. 310 – c. 230 BC). But, based on wrong scientific explanations of Ptolemy, many peoples pay the price denying it (Giordano Bruno was burned to death, Galileo was prisoned, etc.) So wrong scientific explanations could have enormous consequences.

Alexandro Volta’s discovery was the scientific discovery, with proper scientific explanations. Followed his work, and using his Voltaic pile, Sir Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday, and many other pillars of electrochemistry in their fundamental and applied research, establish electrochemistry as a science. Without Volta's work, the progress during the 19 century will probably delay.
