Dear friends,

I am interested in the Stern-Gerlach experiment, with spin 1 atoms.

I see in pictures that the apparatus contains two long magnets, typically, of 13 cm length. I am interested to reduce this length, without reducing the separation between the beams exiting the apparatus i.e. correspinding to the spin projection.

One method is to work with atoms of small mass. Can somebody name a type of neutral atom with spin 1 and low atomic mass? As I have to do with neutral atoms, the spin of which I ask is not the nuclear spin, but the total spin of the atom

I am also interested in the order of magnitude of the velocity of the atom entering the apparatus. Could it be of a couple of Km/s?

With thanks to the contributors.
