I am trying to solve the taxonomic difficulty of the famous Megaloeros giganteus, the type specimen of which seems to be unknown. Blumenbach (1799), for the first time applied the species name Alce gigantea mentioning the fossil remains from Ireland, but without any explicit reference. The first good scientific description of the giant deer from Ireland before Blumenbach, apparently, belongs to Molyneux (1697). He provided a description with measurements and a figure of an antlered skull from Dardistown near Drogheda (Ireland). It seems that Mulyneux's specimen is a good candidate for type specimen of giant deer. Is it possible to track the fate of that specimen? The paper of Molyneux is attached here.
