I would suggest that the development and use of sustainable materials in construction technology is dependent on a number of factors like:

• Building Regulations and Technology (e.g., if there is a requirements for a building construction to achieve a particular U-value, there would be a need to introduce insulation materials that would support this achievement).
• Investment in research and innovation (e.g., investment of this nature can support development of local sustainable materials based on historic local tradition or new materials based on local waste or row materials; this could include financial support for change of existing construction materials manufacturing processes in favor of production of sustainable materials).
• Education (e.g., education of professional and general public about the benefits of sustainable materials, where the use of sustainable materials become consumer preference).
• Financial incentives (e.g., where use of sustainable material is potentially subsidized at least for a period of time until the sustainable materials become prevalent on the market).
• External funding requirements (e.g., external funding for the construction process could be conditioned by the use of a certain percentage of sustainable materials on the project).
• Introduction of local eco-ratings (e.g., where local construction materials can be rated based on their ecological impact; then these achieving certain ratings of materials or building can be linked with availability of government funding, etc.)

These are probably some of the ways how the use of sustainable construction materials might be promoted.

Thanks for initiating such an interesting discussion. The nexus between academic research and practice in the construction industry remains a weak link. Most of the innovative and sustainable technologies or materials may have been well-discussed from a more theoretical perspective and represented in academic journals, but have not persistently presented to industry practitioners (who by the way often do not read academic journal articles), limiting their practical application.

I am currently conducting research to address this practice gap in sustainable construction. From my research, the following strategies may proof useful

1. Research into sustainable materials and method in construction technology must adopt participatory approaches where the ideas of industry practitioners are involved in the co-creation of the materials. For all you know, significant funding may be used for a project whose findings may have no real practical applications. Meanwhile, industry practitioners are confronted with the problems in their daily works and maybe well-placed to make useful contributions to addressing the challenges

2. We have to also begin to measure and monetize the practical benefits of these sustainable materials and methods through objective, evidence-based participatory research. This is because the disruptive nature of the technologies could only be accepted if practitioners are convinced of their value-added benefits.

3. We should also be ready to organize or attend exhibitions and expos to demonstrate and showcase the practicality and value-added benefits of our prototype sustainable technologies and methods. Where possible, these prototypes should be implemented on small scale using local public policy funds.

I have a firm believe that the diffusion of these sustainable materials and methods into the construction industry would not materialize until we proof their real value-added benefits over the existing extenched practices, materials and technologies. Our applied research must move in tandem with strategies to refine the conservative nature and mindset of the construction industry
