We experience noisy readings with our optical turbidity and chlorophyll probes used with the YSI 6600 continuous monitoring sonde. By noisy I mean sudden and abrupt changes (usually higher) in the readings from the typically more gradual trendline derived from a 15-minute sampling interval. We suspect that the problem may be caused by the blockage from bits of aquatic weeds or strands of algae blocking the optical sensors. We are experimenting with the use of 1/4 inch galvanized mesh placed around the sonde guards and the initial results look promising. I wonder if others have used this or other techniques to deal with this problem and what they recommend to deal with it.
