I am working on in Abaqus Explicit to simulate impact of an identor of mass 25.45 on a Steel Circular Hollow Section. This is a two step process. In the first step, axial load is applied on the CHS in quasi static manner and the energy histories confirm the application of quasi static load i.e. KE is far less than the IE and WK.

In the second step, the identor falls on the steel tube with a predefined velocity of 7m/s. When I look at the impact force and compare it with experimental results, I observe that this force depends on mesh sizing of identor as well as CHS tube.

If the impact force is satisfied at one axial load level, the results are drastically changed as compared to experiment for another axial load level.

2 pictures of the results of impact force are attached with difference in mesh sizing. The results where max force is 11kN is the correct one and matches with experimental results. However, if mesh sizing is changed, the impact force value changes. What might be the reason for that?

I want to ask about the suggestions regarding the mesh sizing of identor and CHS tube for consistent results.
