Many farmers in subtropical India grow sugarcane in spaces between Populus tree during first 2-3 years of Populus plantations. They are facing difficulties in selecting the herbicides safe to both the crops. Atrazine is safe to sugarcane but not safe to Populus tree. Kindly suggest pre or post herbicide being safe to both sugarcane and Populus tree.

Thanks Dr. J.C. Tarafdar for valuable suggestion. We are already applying topramezone and tembotrione in sole sugarcane. These herbicides could be a good choice for intercropping system also.

Trees have shallow roots if they are young and are more prone to damage, but if they are more than three years old they usually have deep roots and are less at risk. I have a few suggestions for you.
1- If possible, use a hand sprayer to reduce your consumption.
2- Before planting sugarcane, you can use Terflan to control maximum weeds and not to damage the trees.
3. The use of Randup and Gramaxon is much less dangerous than Atrazine.
4- For permanent weeds, try to use manual weeding.
5 - From a plastic barrier that you put to a depth of 2-3 meters of soil to prevent excess movement of drained sugarcane water to the trees.
