One of my colleagues screened sugar content in lower, middle and upper parts of sweet sorghum culms from hundreds of varieties. She found that the contents in some varieties are highest in the lower part, others in the upper part, the rest in the middle part (deviation was quite small). It will be great if one can generalize me about biological and physical factors influencing the photosynthate allocation in sweet sorghum culm, and explain the different between varieties?

we have other examples. in tobacco, alkaloids have different distribution in different parts of leaves( more around midrib). in sugar cane quality and quantity of sugar change in different parts of culm. it depends on relation between source and sink and their enzymes.
Thank Saeid for the answer and the additional information. It is believable that the the photosynthates distribute differently and depending on source-sink relationship. But I thought the distribution would be similar in one species. While, form what we found, the distribution model differed or eventually opposed between varieties in one species????
Variation in what type of sugar levels? Reducing sugars or nonreducing sugars or total sugars? The activity of sucrose synthase and or invertase determine sugar lavels.
