In most universities, professors use fear to motivate students to performance. They are likely to say something like, “Study hard to make a good grade on the test. If you don’t, you’ll fail the class!” This has led to an emphasis on students’ parts to make a grade rather that learn the information.
Well, it depends on the objective of studies. From the perspective of an ESL instructor, I prefer to run tests as exercises even calling them jokingly "testercise" for my international students.However, in ESL field, when it comes to proficiency tests courses such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. the focus is not (only) learning but achieving a certain score. Although I had taught many of these exam courses, I am not very much of a believer of test evaluations. Until we have a better form of assessments for language proficiency/levels , if we ever develop some, we will still have to rely on those exams, unfortunately. I am currently teaching Business English and consider weekly tests as "learning activities". The more they make mistakes the more they learn !
