Goal: I'm an old man and that's why my picture might lay on it's side. Also, I'm a pharmacologist, computational chemist and neurologist, so I probably shouldn't be messing with synthetic chemistry. But this one seems simple. Carboxylic acid + SOCl2 = respective acyl halide. I've always wondered about the following. Equimolar neat SOCl2 and carboxylic acid, or excess SOCl2, and if excess, approximately how much (in molar ratios)? Many sincere thanks to all. I know, a dumb question. I've always used 2 SOCl2 to 1 acid, or more, but things haven't always gone right. Maybe for another reason. Thanks again.
