Occasionally one sees analyses of means or medians used as input data in e.g. in a t-test or a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. An example would be a group of neurons with firing rates (averages, i.e means) compared using a t-test or Wilcoxon Signed Rank test before and after presenting some stimulus. My memory from my student days says that this is incorrect. Such a type of analysis is usually not discussed in statistics texts which reinforces my impression that this is not correct. Is there some formal treatment of this question, perhaps a published reference one can use?
