Hi, I would like to know how important it is to have specific field of study stated in my transcript? My background is in cancer research so I thought that Biotechnology or Applied Biology is not too broad but not too specific. The university fixed it to Biology. How will this affect my chances when applying for job? I understand that my CV will speak for itself but I am still worried that it may affect a bit if any.
Hello, you can write applied biology and add a little description that is it.
Applied Biology is fine but very broad and employers will not understand. So, a brief statement (say one sentence) of description of your research within Applied Biology should tell your research story more explicitly.
Hi Karen, thanks for the reply. The thing is I am not able to change it. My PhD would be PhD (Biology) rather than PhD (Applied Biology or Biotechnology). The graduate office told me that it is the only available code from university for all life sciences postgrads to be stated as Biology instead their supposedly major field. Although my CV would have further details on the specifics, how would an employer sees this from their point of view? Does having specific major vs broad term used would impact if any in their decision making? What about online job application, would AI algorithm ignore my application if it is being used to screen job applicants, being that my field does not fit specific field if it is set to certain specific keyword in field of study? My application may not have the same impact unless the employer screen through CVs one by one.
