The Indian traditional medicine system Ayurveda was developed as an extension of Vedic knowledge. The traditional Indian religious texts Rig Veda and other Srutis and Smrities refer to several medicinal and aromatic plants. The 2 epics Ramayana and Maha Bharatha also refer to several medicinal and aromatic plants and their uses. In Rig Veda, Oshadhi Suktam (compilation of stanzas on medicinal plants) describes medicinal plants. There are several instances in Puranas and other religious texts where medicinal and aromatic plants have been mentioned.
