I am interested in the topic of solar energy production forecasting for a ground-mounted PV system of more than 100MW capacity.
Can anyone please suggest what are the main data points that will be required?
Would python be a good software for such forecasting or do I need to have the knowledge of any other software?

I second the colleague Hesan, you can find any computer language to develop the code of your calculations and logical decisions. Matlab/ Simlink is the software environment that is used normally to calculate the yield of a PV power stations among years using the information provided by the nearest weather station.
You can also use Python. There may be already similar tasks have been carrier out and published in the literature. You mat find also tool boxes for these tasks in matlab/Simulink and in Python.

There are several ways to model the output energy of a PV plant. You can either use a commercial software package (a few are freely available) or have your own script written, in any computer language, python, MATLAB, etc., (indeed python is a good choice).
The main input data are location, weather, and PV system installation specifications (electrical and mechanical). Check the attached slide to get a better idea on “where to begin”. Also take a look at the attached paper.
Moreover, chapters 17th and 18th of this book (https://books.google.nl/books/about/Solar_Energy.html?id=vTkdjgEACAAJ&redir_esc=y) will help you write your own PV energy prediction script.
As for the commercial software packages, you could try:
1. System Advisor Model (https://sam.nrel.gov/),
2. PVsyst (https://www.pvsyst.com/),
3. Plant predict (https://plantpredict.com/), etc.

For PV power forecasting you may use a direct approach (with some statistical timeseries forecasting method), which predicts the expected power from the last several measurement data, but it is only effective for a short time horizon (
