Hello Sir/Madam, I am looking for estimating SOM (Soil organic matter) from SOC (soil organic carbon), is there any equation by which I can calculate SOM using SOC???
Secondly, how do I measure soil porosity by using the value of soil bulk density???

Organic matter (%) = Total organic carbon (%) x 1.72
Bulk Density = Dry wt of bulk sample ÷ volume of soil core
Soil porosity (%) = 1 - (soil bulk density / 2.65)
Organic matter (%) = Total organic carbon (%) x 1.72
This conversion factor assumes organic matter contains 58 % organic carbon. However this can vary with the type of organic matter, soil type and soil depth. Conversion factors can be as high as 2.50, especially for subsoils.

Organic matter contain 58 per cent of organic carbon which can be expressed in an equation that is % OM= % OC × 100/58= % OC × 1.72(Bemmelen factor)...% organic carbon in the soil can be enumerated by using walkley and black method..
100 %= % solid space + % pore space
% Pore space= 100- % solid space
% pore space= 100-(BD/PD×100)
% pore space or porosity= (1-BD/PD)× 100...
By using value of bulk density of the soil given, we can calculate porosity or per cent porse space of the soil..
(We can use particle density of 2.65 g/cc)
