I'm a simple qualitative researcher who wants to hire a RA to do some analysis of social media data towards identifying trends in community engagement surrounding the shift to on-line activism in a specific social movement organization. But I don't really know where I'd find grad students who have the skills I need. In what kinds of programs do they teach/learn such things?
Global media discourse is a sub-part of media linguistics which addresses the main themes such as globalization, localization , social equity, liberation movement, etc. A very good source to begin your project would be the book titled as " Global Media Discourse: A Critical Introduction" written by Machin and van Leeuven (2007).
Thanks Robert Case for the question. I've dealt with Schools of Communication that teach this topic, together with Media Faculties. I doubt that they 'analyse' social media and the web per se, but perhaps as part / chapter of a course on such matters. In some tertiary programmes in my country, social media / web media courses are electives that are open to all students across all majors. All the best in finding your RA!
