This may be applicable to shed some light. We have analyzed SME characteristics during life cycle, not necessarily business cycle from an economic standpoint. Look at our paper on Market Orientation, and the chart attached from a forthcoming chapter on innovation over company growth.
This is an interesting and under-researched topic. You may give a look to the VAR approach where we linked structural features and responses to shocks.Market Organization and Propagation of Shocks: The Furniture Industry in Germany and Italy
Small Business Economics, 1998, vol. 11, issue 2, pages 169-82
Abstract: In this paper we study the furniture industry in two European countries, Germany and Italy. Although the two industries are characterized by very similar output and technology, they differ widely in terms of market organization, most notably the distribution of firms by size, and the organization of retail. We find some evidences that these differences have an influence on the dynamic behavior of industry output, prices and exports in the two countries. Copyright 1998 by Kluwer Academic Publishers
Dear Massimo, thank you for this suggestion. Currently I am cooworking on the issues, and we are still thniking how to 'show' the real impact of business cycle on SMEs. The major issue is which variables shall we chose. Thanks for this paper, I will on this, Best, Ewa Lechman

One way, you can treat it supplementary, is to look at the business tendency surveys results. If you have more detailed data (Polish CSO provide it on its website), you can analyse time series for each class of enterprises which concerns current situation and their expectations regarding the future course of business environment. You can find results on business situation for enterprises with 10-49 persons employed, 50-249 persons employed and 250 and more persons employed separately.
The business tendency surveys are conducted in different sectors of manufacturing, construction, services, trade…I think it can be a reach source of information in this context.
