It is an interesting method to modify the surface propeties of minerals by condensation of silanes and -OH groups on mineral surface.
The silylated materials can be used as adsorption agents, filling materials, catalysts and so on.

We recently modified the octaedric layer of kaolinite with substituted catechols which coordinate to the aluminum atoms. A colleague of mine used titanocene dichloride to modify such minerals via coordination.
